Alibaba Shares Jump 5% on New Alipay AI Merchant Platform
Alibaba Group Holding shares climbed after Alipay launched an artificial intelligence-powered platform for businesses. This platform automates tasks, driving investor optimism before the company's June quarter earnings report.

Alipay Launches AI Platform
Alibaba Group Holding shares increased by 5% in Hong Kong, marking their largest rise in two weeks. This surge followed Alipay’s introduction of an “all-in-one” platform for businesses. The new platform uses artificial intelligence (AI) agents to automate various tasks.
Ant Group Chief Executive Officer Cyril Han stated the initiative supports “agentic commerce growth” and new AI-powered services. Investor sentiment improved ahead of Alibaba's June quarter earnings, scheduled for release this Thursday.
Market Performance and Outlook
Alibaba's stock has recovered significantly, rallying more than 40% from its low point in June 2026. This rebound follows an earlier sell-off during 2026. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg forecast an 8.4% revenue increase for the three months ending June 2026.
However, free cash flow (FCF) – the money a company generates after covering its operating expenses and capital expenditures – is expected to remain negative, largely due to ongoing AI investments.
Analyst Views on Competition
Funds are shifting capital towards Alibaba and away from Tencent Holdings, according to Steven Leung, an executive director at UOB Kay Hian in Hong Kong. Tencent reported sluggish earnings last week, while Alibaba demonstrates more visible growth, particularly from its cloud services.
This new merchant platform follows Alibaba's June 2026 debut of Ah Bao, an AI agent interface for consumers. Ah Bao enables users to access daily services like bill payments and electric vehicle charger location.
These AI-driven platform launches aim to strengthen Alibaba's appeal to potential users. The company seeks to boost engagement amidst weak domestic consumption across China. For Asian businesses, Alibaba's continued investment in AI and platform expansion could intensify competition in digital services and e-commerce.
Companies operating in the region may see increased pressure to integrate AI solutions for efficiency and customer acquisition, particularly as Alibaba leverages its extensive user base.
