Share Placement for AI Expansion

Alibaba Group Holding priced its new share placement at HK$112.70 per share, the company announced in a stock exchange filing on Monday. This offering aims to raise HK$80 billion (US$10.2 billion) by issuing 710 million new shares.

The capital will exclusively fund Alibaba's artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives, including investments in its “full-stack AI capabilities” and efforts to “extend the company’s global AI leadership”. This represents one of China's largest AI-dedicated fundraising efforts by a technology firm.

Market Reaction and Discount

The share price reflects an 8.4 per cent discount to Alibaba's Hong Kong closing price on Friday. It also offers a 3.6 per cent discount compared to its New York-listed shares' Friday closing price, the company filing revealed. Following the announcement, Alibaba's Hong Kong shares dropped over 10 per cent after the market opened on Monday.

The 710 million newly issued shares constitute approximately 3.7 per cent of the company’s total 19.17 billion outstanding shares.

Strong Investor Interest

The new share sale, first announced on Sunday, reportedly garnered significant pre-launch interest. A person familiar with the matter indicated that expressions of interest exceeded the deal size. This demand was driven by “strong interest received from sovereign wealth funds and global long-only investors”.

This capital injection demonstrates Alibaba's commitment to AI, a critical area for future growth in the competitive tech landscape. It highlights ongoing investor appetite for AI-focused ventures, even amidst a discounted share offering.

Why it matters

For Asian investors, this share placement shows how major Chinese tech firms are prioritising AI development. Alibaba's decision to raise capital through equity, despite a discount and immediate stock dip, underscores the perceived long-term value of AI investments. Other regional tech companies may observe this capital-raising strategy.

The market's reaction also suggests investor caution regarding dilution, even for strategic growth areas like AI. This transaction provides a benchmark for future large-scale AI funding rounds in Asia.
